Simon does it his own way, he doen't incoorperate his stickings into a mushanga, doesn't play the rosanna shuffle the way it's "meant" to be played etc. He's his own person in everything he does with Toto.

I think out from that post, i'm moving father and father away from Mangini. It's like a japanese wonderkid playing all the sick mozart parts on the piano, but does it so cold, and so disciplinized that it becomes so borring and intimidating towards the composer himself.

Bozzio had a vision behind those fills, so did Neil Peart. I'd like to Quote George Carlin here " It's not only how you play the blue notes, it's also important to know - why they're meant to played".

He's soo right there, even a stand-up comedian can see the purpose here.

Vinnie has a personal "patent" ( if you can call it that ) on Seven Days, Jeff has one on the signature thing he did.

It does'ntglect a player to play these grooves, but playing them entirely the way the authors did, is not only a proportion of musical stagnancy, but also, for me, a personally attack on the author himself. It's like re-inventing the deep dish and putting your name as the inventor on the same model that was created years ago.


Mangini is on a technical level that is unreal, and the possibilites for him is never-ending. But then. WHY does he put up with the same parts as the original drummer on the tracks then?

Mangini plays the same parts because of his absolute respect and admiration for the drummers who created those parts. He does his own thing on his own stuff. In Missing Persons he was hired to play the drums much like TB did. Changing a part would be like an actor making up his own words in a play.

This goes along w that other thread where faithfully replicating many parts in select pop tunes was discussed...

In certain sit's [or passages], "quoting verbatim" may be necessary. In others, more liberties...it's up to you [& your "artistic license"] to decide which is which... ;-)

I just kinda imagine this kind of picture ( Yeah you watched NP doing this lick, now watch ME doing it with only one hand kids! ) You know, the sportsmanship behind Manginis approach is something i can't acknowledge. I have yet to experience Mike more than what i've seen from the last years vids from here and drummerworld.

This guy can play alot of things and, some of it, I like and i get inspired, the other is just...... [img]graemlins/storm.gif[/img]

I think it is kind of silly to be doggin' a player like Mangini, i mean, it isn't like he can't play the drums... he just doesn't play them the way some like. He is a player to whom you could probably set any sheet of music in front of and he could play it, maybe just with not as much "feel" as one would like (i dunno, or maybe he could).

It isn't like some players that i have seen on other sites who can rip on the pedals but can't really even play the drums with a level of proficiency that would pass in a high school jazz band.

I mean, could anyone on here, with confidence, just walk up and point out to a player of his proficiency, something they aren't good at and not feel a little weird? I mean, of course he isn't everything but i don't think i could keep a straight face when telling Mike, "Um, i think you need to work on your groove". It is really a situation where i think i would hold my tongue, unless he asked me, because think about it... unless you're Phil Jackson or Bill Russell, are you really going to walk up to Shaq and tell him he needs to work on his free throws? People talk about it alot, but i don't see many guys on Sports Center telling him, "Hey, your free throws, c'mon, you suck"... uh yeah, i see more like ass-kissin' going on.

To be so dominant in one area, sure another area is going to suffer some, but that is their path that they chose and they are damn great at what they have choosen to be good at.

Good point, Matricks. That's kind of what I've been getting at all along. There isn't a drummer alive that you couldn't find something that they couldn't improve upon.

I don't think anyone was raggin' on Mike personally. It's just drum talk.

I do think a topic more relevant is this idea of playing a gig--subbing or taking over a chair. Do you play note 4 note? Is there room for persoanl expression and interpretation?

When Randy auditioned for a major act (can't recall if this was public info or not so I omit name of band) was he going to nail the drummer's stuff exactly or come close if he got the gig? Doesn't it really depend on the band leader's input and direction?

This to0pic is similar to playing covers, but more connected in that you are actually playing WITH the original band, ala Mike w/Missing Persons.
